I take a lot of sticks and slashes to the feet, so the shoe matters. The AK5 v2 has a molded padded forefoot and a reinforced toe cap, and that's the part actually doing the work out there. I still get slashed in the toes plenty and end up with black and blue toenails, but it would be way, way worse without them.
I wore the AK7 for years and I'd still be in them, but Knapper only makes the new version as a high top. They used to do both. I want a low cut, so I dropped down to the AK5. The one thing I gave up is the padded cover over the laces, which the AK7 has and this doesn't. The toe and the forefoot are still built up, just not that strip across the top.
Grip is the reason I keep buying Knapper in the first place. Rain or a damp deck destroys most footwear, and their outsole holds up better than anything else I've tried out there. Not perfect, but really good.
The thing I was watching for was the insole, because that's what died first on my old pair and I'd swap in aftermarket ones right away. The v2 ships with a new molded one and it feels like a real improvement, so I'm leaving it alone for now and seeing how it holds up.
